Q: I am a girl who hates backbiting and slandering. Sometimes I sit among a group talking about the conditions of people and backbiting and slandering them. I myself hate and detest such behavior. However, I am too shy to forbid them from doing so and there is no other place where I can leave them. Allah knows that I hope that they engage in a talk other than that. Is there a sin on me because I sit with them? What I should do. May Allah guide you to what is of benefit for Islam and Muslims.
A: You commit a sin, if you sit with them except if you condemn what is wrong. If they accept this from you, then praise be to Allah; otherwise, you should leave them and avoid sitting with them
And when you (Muhammad ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳـﻠﻢ) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'ân) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitân (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers).
And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur'ân) that when you hear the Verses of Allâh being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them.
Whoever, among you, sees something abominable should rectify it with his hand; and if he has no strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue; and if he has no strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of Faith. It is verified by Imam Muslim in his Sahih
